Whistles, shoes squeaking, and cheers from the growing crowd. On Thursday evening, September 3rd, the girls’ varsity volleyball team warmed up in the gym, preparing for their first home game of the season. Everyone was expectant, as seen when asking the senior Allie Brooks (player 10) how she thought this season would go; she replied, saying, “I think we are a very strong group of players individually, but I think that we still have room to grow as a team.” The gym began to quickly come alive as players passed the ball across the court and practiced their serves before the game. The smack of volleyballs echoed throughout the gym, and cheers from the stands grew louder as the opening whistle approached. After tons of practice and preparation, the team felt confident that they were ready to play on the familiar ground of Rancho Solano’s gym.

The first serve started with the referees’ whistle and the banging alarm from the scoring table that indicated that the game was starting. Both teams had an introduction, with the difference that the Rancho team had a new and exciting video played on the big screen displaying photos and group pictures of the girls with fierce expressions. Then, the game began, and the pace was visibly intense. Players moved quickly around the court, communicating with one another and working to keep each rally alive. Powerful serves traveled across the net while precise sets created opportunities for strong attacks. When the opposing team returned the ball, players scrambled to make saves, sometimes diving across the floor to keep the play going. Winning the first two sets was a result of the teams’ determination, but by the third set, they began to grow tired and started to fall behind.

For the players, competing at home brought an added sense of excitement but also stress. Having classmates, friends, and family watching from the stands created an atmosphere that was difficult to ignore. That support could be heard throughout the match despite the score on the board. The crowd erupted after successful kills and impressive saves, while teammates on the bench constantly called out chants of encouragement.

The Stang Gang was also packed in the stands, with students hyping the fans and the players up. When asked, a teacher in the crowd, Mr. McCulley, said: “The crowd was electric and infused with the energy of the Stang Gang,” showing that everyone could feel the support. Losing the third set after a streak of winning the earlier two seemed to be a reality check for the girls, allowing them to push down their exhaustion and get their heads back into the game to win and finish off strong. The fourth set highlighted the importance of teamwork as players upped their communication, emboldening each other after mistakes, and celebrating together after earning points. Their ability to stay connected to the court reflected the time and effort they all seemed to be prepared to dedicate to the rest of their season. As the match continued, the intensity only grew. Players chased balls toward the sidelines, jumped to block at the net, and fought through every rally. The crowd remained engaged until the final points, giving the team constant encouragement from the stands. The teams were both one away from 25 points, and everyone was silent, waiting for someone to score the final winning point. Suddenly everyone erupted as a block was made, causing the ball to drop on the other teams’ side of the net. The RSPS team won!

Students ran onto the court, jumping and celebrating. Although the first home game marked only one night of the season, it allowed the girls’ varsity volleyball team to compete in front of their community to build momentum for the games ahead. With more matches on the schedule, the team will look to carry the energy from this game into the rest of their season.
